Charles, a son of artists, was raised in Athens, Greece. He came to the US to study at SUNY at Stony Brook. He took design and studio art classes, and later completed a short filmmaking program at NYU.
Charles Lane is based in Jersey City, NJ and is a member of the Pro Arts Jersey City professional community.
I have always been interested in our ambiguous relationship to nature. Although I had a strong bond with nature as a child, I soon found myself attracted to all a city had to offer. The connection faded away, its deep memory only revived by the occasional excursion.
Since 2014, I have been working on my iPad and iPhone. I find that their accessibility and ease of use allow me to be spontaneous.
While I seek formal beauty in my work, I am mostly motivated by a desire to subvert our perception of reality, exposing a dreamlike quality in the ordinary. I have always been attracted to surrealism, most recently inspired by artists Mathew Barney and Bruce Nauman.
